Talk To A Producer

What Is A Producer?

A producer supervises and coordinates the recording of a an audio recording project. The process of completing an audio recording project is called "production." A good producer can help musicians avoid making costly mistakes.

Usually, a producer is also a songwriter, musician, composer, or arranger. Producers with these skills can contribute ideas to a project and make necessary adjustments to a composition.

While Custom Recording Studios does not employ any producers, a number of producers regularly use our studio for their projects.

Two of our favorite producers to work with are Stu Nankin and David Swanson.

Stu Nankin

Electric Bassist, Producer, Recording and Mastering Engineer, Audio Restoration Specialist.

Stu is an experienced, versatile musician and audio technician in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, who has done a lot of work with Jim Reynolds and Custom Recording Studios. He has played a wide range of musical genres, including Classic and Progressive Rock, R&B/Soul, Surf, Pop Jazz, Disco/Funk, Big Band, Latin, Classical, Country, and a variety of other styles. Stu possesses very good knowledge of music structure, has a natural talent for arranging, organizing and developing musical ideas, and the ability to write great-sounding scores for brass and strings.

As a bassist, Stu has worked with high profile groups over the years, such as the very popular regional rock band Chameleon, and with individual musicians who have played with artists such as Prince and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As a producer and audio technician, Stu has been involved with several notable projects at Custom Recording Studios, and has also handled location recording, mastering and audio restoration tasks for individuals, small groups and large institutions, some of which were done in collaboration with Jim Reynolds.

David Swanson

Tel 612-202-8525

David "Swanee" Swanson has been one of our main music and vocal producers since the early 2000s. He presently owns and plays with the famous back-to-the-50s-and-60s singing and musical act The Whitesidewalls and also works with many national and local artists.

Besides being a great music producer, he is one of the best vocal producers around.

Swanee has played with many national artists: Rick Nelson, Carl Perkins, Bobby Vee, Del Shannon, Johnny Rivers, Chuck Nigren (of Three Dog Night), Otis Day, and Joey Molland (of Bad Finger), just to name a few. He has shared the stage with hundreds of other national artists. Also, he has arranged and performed for many celebrities, including President George Bush, President Bill Clinton, John Glenn, and Arnold Palmer.

Swanee has a long history of producing, locally and nationally. He produced and engineered his first record album in 1979. That album, now re-mastered to CD, is still selling today by the thousands. Swanee's love for music and recording is timeless and his dedication to his clients is second to none.

He performs lead and backup vocal and plays many instruments, including saxophone (alto, tenor, and baritone), keyboards and synthesizers, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and others.

You can be sure that Swanee will get the best performance and product possible for your CD project.
